Now updated to the 2nd edition, Jeff Duntemann's Wi-Fi Guide demonstrates practical methods for setting up a new wireless network or upgrading an existing one within Windows. Decision criteria is fully explained on using 802.11 technologies, especially Wireless-B (802.11b) and the new Wireless-G (802.11g) with WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) security. Methods are included for implementing your network, preferred infrastructure to use (including access points, routers, and switches), as well as proven ways to enhance your coverage areas through custom-built antennas and wardriving. Measures are provided on ways to bolster security with network devices and operating systems, with a good portion of the book dedicated to security. The book includes lots of illustrations and is written in an easy to understand style. The book is clearly geared for Wi-Fi with Windows, and does not cover Linux systems (see my book review of Linux Unwired).

I have used a Wireless-B network for five years now, having explained the wonders of the technology to others. Now, I have a book to recommend to them, that even non-geeks will love. My next step is to soon upgrade to the faster speed of Wireless-G. Wireless Internet access is now appearing everywhere. Everyone wants the portability and instant access. Here in Austin, all of the area parks are becoming wireless hotspots, giving workers (and myself...) another excuse to get out of the office.

This book is an essential guide in understanding the maze of wireless marketing lingo, the underlying technology, the array of options available out there, security considerations, and how to best utilize wireless. The author has an impressive track record with use of wireless technologies, has written many technology books, magazine co-founder (PC Techniques and Visual Developer), and co-founder for the book publishers Coriolis Group and Paraglyph Press.
